Does it really improve tracktion on ice to sipe or cut lines in tires. I have wondered if this was sucha good idea then why don't tire manufacter's just do this at the factory. If it does work how does it effect the life of the tire? I would think the integrity of the tire may be effected as well. i have herd truckers swear on sipped tires and I know tire manufacturers heavily disscourage sipping. Myth or truth? What is the story?

Tire Siping sounds legit for snow and mud according to these sites;

http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/tech/sipe/

http://sipers.com/sipers/index_large.asp

Apparently in the U.S. tire Siping is offered as a service at Tire Shops;

And this site displays a Siping tool

Down Side is when driving on Dry warm Roads, supposedly Siped tires feel "squirmy".
