my mother grew up on a farm with horses. She is very knowlegeable about them. she told me about a myth that i would like to share with you. mshe says my grandpa swore that if you plucked three hairs off of a horse's tail and put them in water, at least one of them would turn into a live "horse hair worm". personally, i think the old men who told this to my family were all crackers, but who knows.
