hello!
i'm posting more not-so-usefull info, but... since we have the chance... u know, since travel n living's doing all this... ur forced to listen to my "info"
anyways.... wellington's really really really nice...
but u have to get wet in the rain... go for a walk in it. the wind's mad. u'l freeze, but sometimes, u know, u just HAVE to freeze.
then try to get into the parliament house (we couldnt... but probably bec we didnt try)
but the wellington YHA has a list of '100 things to do in wellington" which was real fun. maybe u cud take a look at that (bec i dont remember any of it). u know, its all those unusual things u can do in a city, other than the general sightseeing, whale watching, etc.
somehow i think maybe if u tried to move away from the general tourist activities a city will offer, you can actually see what its like to live in a city like that and do the things people there do for their entertainment, u know. and that actually feels like ur getting to know the place and understanding the people u'v visited. and at least we indians are vastly different from new zealanders, so it was fun for me. (and vice versa, in your own city sometimes do the traditional tourist things.. and pretending to be a tourist adds to entertainment, camera, picnic basket, all of it).

so, hope u have fun in welly, and dont let the rain/wind bother you... rain's always better when UR not the one going to work, or running to school, or getting late....

As a Wellington native, I hope my information is useful for you.

One of Wellingtons most famous attractions in the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongawera (known more commonly as Te Papa) which is situated on the Waterfront on Cable Street. There you can explore New Zealand's geology, its Native Birds and Animals, History, there is a Marae, an art gallery, it's awesome! Currently there is Lord of the Rings exhibit, where you can look at some of the props, models and costumes (I've been to this and I personally recommend it).

Other attractions include the Wellington Cable Car, which runs from Lambton Quay, runs past Victoria University to the Botanical Gardens, which hosts some of Wellington's best views, Carter Observatory and Planetarium and the Cable Car museum. Cable Cars have been operating in Wellington for over a hundred years and are a very cheap and popular way to explore.

Fans of Lord of the Rings can also find many famous filming locations which are scattered all over the city and wider Wellington region, and there are many tours you can take to find these locations.

I'm a fan of the show and looking forward to seeing your take of my town. Have fun!

Emma.

Hey TJ's,

I've just started watching the show and as an aussie living overseas it was great to see a bit of home.
Have never been to NZ so look forward to seeing what you get up to.

Anyway saw that there wasn't much posted on Wellington, so... I had a look around, (researching as if I was heading there myself - sigh)

So the info isn't first hand but... apparently there is a place called Bar Bogeda in Ghuznee St that has live bands playing - you might catch some local bands there, Oh and a record shop called Real Groovy also on cuba st i think.and then nearby in Cuba St there are loads of cafes and bars.

Have seen 2 things mentioned that sound good Vivo where you can do wine tasting and near that is The Brewery Bar. (the names enough to make me want to check it out)

oh and just read that Motel Bar is wellingtons hottest night spot and apparently Liv Tyler was turned away. (lol dont you just love how these bits of trivia get attatched to places)

There's supposed to be a placed called the Embassy Theatre (now showing movies) that was built in 1924 ( which might be worth checking out, i like old stuff so its something i would look for if i was going)

I loved reading Lord of the Rings and the movies showed some absolutely stunning scenery, so if money allowed i'd try to get out and see some of it, thats what NZ is famous for, its stunning landscapes. Oh the LOTR exhibition sounds interesting too. ( from previous post)

LOL, as i havent been yet i kinda feel like you guys will be scouts sent on ahead to check it out first.

Well at least after watching the show i'll get to see what i've been missing and what i'll get to see when i finally get there myself.

I hope this helps.

Cheers
Bee xx

Yeah Cuba St is where it's all at. Be sure to walk a fair distance away from the bucket fountain, it has a habit of getting you quite wet. Cuba Mall is my favourite place to be in Wellington, it just has such a great atmosphere.

My friend and I were talking about the show today and she mentioned some stuff you guys should check out while you're in the area. I'll talk to her and get a list up for you.

Emma
