Location: CA Posts: 2 | Hey TJs This message started out as a reply to Josh, but may be relevant to you all, so, here it is... You've probably read about the dragon boat races (5/31 is the dragon boat festival) for that adrenoline rush, though I think you need to register before hand. Now, about that rush... I personally get an adrenoline rush dodging the cars and scooters in the streets, running for the MRT as the door closes... But seriously, if you don't find something adrenoline-related by the time you get to Taiwan, maybe trying something totally opposite would be interesting: Wake up early in the morning (say 6-ish?) and go to either Sun Yat Sen Memorial Hall or Chang Kai Shek memorial hall (both can be easily reached by MRT) and join the people doing Tai Chi there. After that, you can walk about and find the many breakfast stalls that sell the fried dough (yo-tiao) wrapped in a sesame-sprinkled "pancake/tortilla" (shao-bing), and dunk that into a bowl of soymilk (dou-jiang) as you eat. Pretty typical Taiwanese style breakfast. If you want some protein with that, get an order of egg-rolled-in-pancake/tortilla (dan-bing). Or, get one of those healthy "rice balls" (fan-tuan) that comes in sweet or savory, with different kinds of fillings (some with that fried dough). Most stalls will make them for you on the spot. And since you'll all be here during the Dragon Boat Fest, ask your hostel/hotel to find out where the festival activities take place. Different organizations/communities host their own, and if you find one, you may get to try to wrap your own rice dumpling (in the shape of a pyramid) in bamboo leaf. Join the dumpling-wrapping contest and maybe you'll get a rush out of it. At 12 noon people try to stand an egg up (the same way Columbus did). Supposedly it can be done really easily at noon on the day of Dragon Boat Fest. I haven't tried it. If you need more specifics, please feel free to post questions here. Good luck, and have a great time! Alex A fellow Angelino |
Location: Taiwan Posts: 25 | Hi, TJs! Have you guys decided where to stay during your visit in Taipei? Last time I recommend you to stay at the Taipei Teacher's Hostel. However, it is under the fix in current… Yesterday I phoned to Taipei Hero House to ask them if they still have the beds available from 28 May to 4 June. They told me that they still have rooms available now on 28-29 May. The 3 beds room is only charged NT$1,500 per night. The 2 beds room is only charged NT$1,200 per night. Because two of my German friends are coming Taiwan next month, I'm also curious of Taipei Hero House. Thus, I went there to check the environment. Amazing! It is superb!! Taipei Hero House is the army based only the soldier can stay there in the past. Now it’s also open for the international backpacker. The location is very convenient. Just take MRT Blue line, and get off at Ximen, then follow the direct named " Taipei Armed Forces Hero House" and quit at Exit 2. As you go out, just go one block straight, and turn left. You will see a White building there, just opposite to a Red building. It's very easy to reach!! PS. Many attractions in Taipei are located on the MRT Blue line!!! It's value added to stay here!! quote: Originally posted by cath: Hey TJs! It's so excited to know that you are coming Taiwan! Last month my friends visited Taiwan, and I introduced them to stay at the Taipei Teacher's Hostel. The location is very convenient and the environment is nice. For the youth travelers, it's only charged NT$500 (approx. US$15) per night during the weekdays. You can get more information from the Youth Guesthouse Network website at http://www.youthguesthouse.org.tw. (It is advised to book the hostel two weeks in advance. Just in case of the over booking. The Taipei Hero Hostel is another good option for your stay. Tony might be interested in the Ximending's nightlife!) You can book the hostel by email: youthguesthouse@nyc.gov.tw. Very easy and convenient! Hereby, I do suggest you to buy a railway passport ( TR Pass) at Taipei Train Station, which is very close to the Taipei Teacher’s Hostel and Ximending. How long will you stay in Taiwan? If you stay here about a week, you can get TR Pass with 10 days. The pass price is NT$1,098 (approx. US$35). With the TR Pass, you can save much more budget in transportation. Please refer to http://youthtravel.tw/web/tr_pass/tr_pass.php for more detail of TR Pass. It strongly suggests you to use Youth Guesthouse Network and TR Pass. Both can save most budgets of your trip. Oh, yes! The Digital Tour Buddy is a whole new tourist service in Taiwan. I just found this new service at http://youthtravel.tw/web/community/community_3_2.php. As far as I know, it provides NT$200 worth of free calls. However, it must be booked in advance by the website. As you arrive Taiwan, you can collect at CKS airport or at Youth Hub in Taipei City. (Youth Hub is located at 1F, No.31, ZhongXiao E. Rd. Sec. 1, Taipei City. You can take MRT Blue Line, get off at Shandao Temple, and leave from Exit 6.) By the way, my friends told me that they met “ Tour Buddy”, a group of students at Longshan Temple and Danshuei. They were happy with their company as they visited these two attractions. Of course, both places are strongly recommended! The Longshan Temple is built in 1740 and famous for its architectural design and lively stone carving! Also, you can get more local delicacies in Danshuei, which is a well-known sea harbor in Taipei. Fish ball soup, A Gei (a kind of fry tofu with noodles), Iron Eggs, Plum juice, and Fish crunchy cookies are typical yummy that cannot be missed!! Welcome to Taiwan!! Here is more than you think!!

I recommend the hostel system operated by China Youth Corps. The Chien Tan Overseas Youth Activity Center is quite good location and convenient. The price is also reasonable. For 5 persons, there is a room for 6 persons and charged NT2800(=80 dollars)/room/night. The environment of this hostel is quite good as well. Don’t try to find the cheaper/cheapest hotel in Xinmendin. You will get a lot of trouble and bothering from the call-girls http://www.cyh.org.tw/center/center_service.php?loginno...809&buid=B&settype=R |
Location: Taiwan Posts: 1 | Welcome to Taiwan!! I recommend that you go to Liu-kui Township in Kaohsiung County for a river rafting. It is the best place for rafting in Taiwan. Enjoy Summer thrills!
