Of course TJs must visit both. Melbourne is an amazing city. In the 1880s it was second only to London in the Brithish Empire, and has a great historical legacy. Fantastic food, nightlife, shopping - Lygons, St, Brunswick St, St Kilda, etc, etc.
Then again, you can't miss Byron. THE alternative Australian destination for international travellers. The eastern-most point in Australia, perfect for watching the sunrise over the ocean. Whale-migration in the spring. Alternative health, meditation, yoga, healing, spas. The best surf in the cournty. Stay in the lighthouse-keepers cottage, and party all night!

The food in Melbourne is incredible! Try the Singapore-Malaysian food at Bismi, along Sydney Road. The Vietnamese food in Richmond is also amazing - they serve beef noodle soup in bowls so large they seem like buckets.
Apart from the food, I liked the Pentridge condo development in the suburb of Coburg - it used to be a prison and now it's a condo, with a lot of the original architecture retained.
Yo, don't forget the Commonwealth Games are currently on in Melbourne!!!! Might be over by the time you guys get there but look out for cheap Games merchandising!
Also, huge Greek community in Melbourne so check out the Greek quarter, restaurants, boozuki bars (more booz than uki)but us Greek's know how to live and guarantee an awsome cultural experience.

It all depends what you're after. Byron for the bohemian life, great beaches, and markets. Melbourne to party, dine at fantastic cafes, soak in the sun, meet weird people, make money at the Casino. Yes i love Melbourne, and i highly recommend it! Did i mention that once you set foot in Melbourne, it has this uncanny ability to get you hooked to the place and always make you want to come back?
