Hi TJs!!!
The challenge question is easypeasy!!! It would make a great day trip to actually just check out the answer to this question.

The answer is the Big Buddha (see link below)
http://www.discoverhongkong.com/eng/touring/hkiidistricts/ta_dist_isla1.jhtml

It is located on Lantau Island (one of the outlying islands). Take a ferry over there (I think its Pier no.6), then bus 2 (from Mui Wo) to the Buddha. (other routes are suggested at the site above.) I am not entirely sure about the actual number of steps, though its most likely 200+ steps. (268? I think its safer to check...its worth the trip!!)

Since you guys are out there anyway...might as well take bus 21 to Tai O, which is a fishing village where you can still see some of the local fishing culture that is preserved in Hong Kong.

Stay safe and have fun in the 852 TJs (when I'm off to Koh Samui where I doubt I'll get internet.)

Cheers!

Hi TJs~

How about staying at Lei Yue Mun Park and Holiday Village in Chai Wan District on Hong Kong Island during your visit to Hong Kong? It's about HK$60 per night!!!!!You cannot find any place cheaper to stay in Hong Kong!
http://www.lcsd.gov.hk/camp/en/p_lymp.php

You could take the bus A12 from the airport to get there.

And It provides free shuttle bus to get to the nearby MTR station and you could go anywhere you like. Have a nice trip~
